Ancient history Ancient Corinthia boardered with the Saronian gulf eastwards, Epidauros south-eastern,the Corinthian gulf northwards, the Isthmus and Megarida north-eastern, Phliasia and Cleonea south-western and Sikiona westwards. Strabon called Corinthia "crooked and rough" because it is a mountainous area. However, significant cities were founded there: Tenea, Cromeon, Titani, Phleous, Cleones, Nemea, Sikeon, and also important ports: Lecheo, Ceghrees, Schenountas. The most significant city was Corinth with which is strongly conected the Corinthian history. Its conquest by the Romans in BC 148, defined the future course of the whole area. Because of its strategical position it faced many conquerors: Goths, Normans, Franks, Byzantines, Venetians and Turks. Corinthia was incorporated in the modern Greek state in 1828. |
